Peru is a fascinating country that has been able to preserve its culture for thousands of years. The ancient culture of Peru can still be experienced today. Cusco is a marvelous city in the southeast of Peru in the Andes mountain range.
Historically, Cusco was the capital of the ancient Inca Empire. It is said that the city was built in the shape of a puma, which was considered to be a sacred animal. Today, Cusco is regarded by many as the cultural center of Peru.
Cusco is a great city to wander and discover by walking the streets. There are Inca walls where you will find stones made into different shapes that are placed perfectly together. The Inca symbol puma can be found near the 12 angle stone.
When taking a tour of Peru, I recommend you don´t miss out on some of Cusco´s great monuments. Cusco is made up of cobble-stoned streets, and is built upon the foundation of the Incas. When you mix this history with the colonial and Renaissance architecture, you have a very beautiful and inviting city.
The Plaza de Armas is the town´s main square. The plaza is a monument that represents the beginning of the Spanish takeover of Cusco. The mixture of history and modern restaurants and shops makes this an interesting place to visit.
Another great must see is Sacsayhuaman. The ruins of Sacsayhuaman are located approximately 1 mile from central Cusco. This site was the headquarters of the Inca Empire and their main fortress.
A tour of the Sacred Valley is also a great experience. This tour is usually a full day tour and is very inexpensive. This tour includes visits to the following sites: the famous Pisac traditional market, Ollantaytambo village and Inca ruins, Chinchero plaza, church and ruins.
This is just a sampling of the many amazing places to see in Peru. Travel to Peru offers such a wide range of possibilities that you will never find yourself with nothing to do. Peru is a place where you can delight in its beauty, history, food, culture and amazing energy.
